Rouen being close to the front, many wounded were sent there from the first months of the war. Auxiliary hospitals were therefore quickly set up in requisitioned civilian buildings. Auxiliary hospital No. 1 was located on the premises of the Jean-Baptiste de la Salle boarding school.
