Funchal, the capital of the\ ‘island of flowers\’ Madeira

When the Portuguese navigators discovered the island of the Atlantic in 1419 they were amazed at the number of wild fennel fields covering it. Hence the name of the capital, Funchal, which in Spanish means fennel. For its mild climate Madeira is also known as the\ ‘green island\’ or the\ ‘flower island\.’
