The Red Tree

This painting by Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) is an explosion of colour in fiery red and cobalt blue, marking a break with his earlier work in a traditional naturalistic style, and signalling his first step towards abstraction. It was evening when Mondrian painted the broad branches of this apple tree in the Zeeland coastal resort of Domburg where, like many other artists, he was spending the summer.
