Statuia o reprezintă pe Niobe, fiica lui Tantalus, care din cauza mândriei pentru creșterea a doisprezece copii a îndrăznit să o sfideze pe Leto (Latona), iubita lui Zeus, mama lui Artemis și Apollo, care au răzbunat umilirea mamei lor prin uciderea copiilor Niobei. Figura este reprezentată în momentul disperării, când mama îndurerată varsă lacrimi amari înainte de a fi metamorfozată într-o stâncă…
