Central Europe, Schleswig - Making Shoes out of Plaited Rushes
Dried rushes (Scirpus lacustris) are plaited to a strong three-strand plait (for the sole) and a slender six cord plait (for the upper part). First the oval sole is seamed together and then the six cord plait is sewn on in spiral twists.
