Pavement, Opus sectile, Ostia

Detail of a pavement in opus sectile in Ostia, Domus di Amore e Psiche (I, XIV, 5); 4th century AD. All marbles are of second-hand use, among them are slabs in Giallo antico and Cipollino. The simple pattern, roundel bordered by squares, finds useful parallels in other late-imperial domus-style houses of Ostia.
