An Italian Woman with Children by a Stream

Johann Köler’s An Italian Woman with Children by a Stream is an extraordinary example of the Nordic view of southern Europe; it shows shades of colour and traits of the human face in a way that only a sensitive visitor could notice. Köler had a whirlwind career in Russia and was one of the first to break free from academic art and turn to soulful realism in his depictions of people and landscape.
